The word bodega means small grocery store, especially in a Spanish-speaking area in the US; in a Spanish-speaking country, bodega might refer to a wine shop or cellar. In 1918, 307 Bodega began its life as a neighborhood grocery store, a bodega. In 1925, Thomas J. Caufield opened Caulfield's Market which carried fresh meats and National Ice Cream. The local bodega'' was common in Petaluma; there were about 20 of them. The small shop across the street was also a grocery. They were about convenience, and walking distance to pick up essentials. Caufield, like so many in the early history of the United States, was an entrepreneur. Entrepreneur is a French word probably coined by the 13th-century economist Jean-Baptiste-Say from the word entreprendre, a verb which is usually translated as to do something to undertake or to adventure. By the 16th Century, it became a noun to mean someone who undertakes a business venture. In Petaluma, two francophiles took over the Caulfield Market space and moved it to another level. Together have created a dynamic business model that they plan to pass on to the next owner. Adopt their business model and make it better. Come see the French Antique Salvage business and the fabulous new barn behind it.
